New CD is out & already garnering praise from local luminaries! - December 30, 2013

“Among the many fine CDs that Kevin Russell has released over the years, this one may very well be the best yet”.  -Allegra Broughton, KRCB, “Connections”

"Kevin has this great ability of handpicking songs of some outstanding writers and covering them extremely well as writing some pretty darn fine songs himself...a real good record!"

Bill Bowker
KRSH/Santa Rosa

"Kevin is a true music fan as well as a great singer and player. Add to that an amazing knack for finding some of the best songs ever written and then he brings in some of the best musicians to play on his albums which always make for a delightful experience."  -Bill Frater, FTB, KRCB/KRSH

I have only tonight finally had a chance to listen to your CD. It is completely fantastic! Everything - the songs, the playing, the harmonies, and especially your singing–which is beautiful and passionate and resonant and layered with storytelling. Just gorgeous.

Plain Dirt Fashion: Kevin Russell

I’ve been a big fan of Kevin Russell’s music for quite a while, having been asked by Bluegrass Now to review his band “ Modern Hicks” some 15-20 years ago. BN fell victim to the Recession earlier this century, but I’m very glad to say Kevin and I have stayed close since then, and that he’s always shared his latest music with me.
Kevin has always had a great flare with his music, always a very engaging mix of songs and styles with a very professional line up of good friends backing him, and mixing and engineering the cuts. His solid country baritone never fails to do real justice to his original music and covers.
Kevin & Co. get to work right away on “Nobody’s Fault But Mine”, Ron Ickes kicking it off as only he can with some real attitude on a growling resophonic guitar lead. Forget toe-tapping; this one will have you struttin’ across your living room.
It’s hard to imagine anything could top this one, but Kevin grabs hold and hangs on to your attention with some outstanding covers of Chet Atkins and Boudleaux Bryant’s “Midnight”, Merle Haggard’s “Hungry Eyes”, Rodney Crowell’s “Long Hard Road”, and Gillian Welch’s “One More Dollar,” to name only a few. Adam Mitchell’s “Out Among the Stars” is beautifully done, a very moving throwback to when this one made Top 40 radio play back more years than I care to admit.
Rounding out this impressive collection is a gorgeous arrangement of the old spiritual, “ Wayfarin’ Stranger.” The stuff of which goose bumps are made, it begins very simply with low, moaning violin sharing the melody with guitar, leading into Kevin’s resonant lead vocal backed by stunning harmony vocals by Allegra Broughton and Cori Wood.
So very much to like about this CD, I have to ask once again: Why is this talent not on a major label yet??
